Rules 1 and 2 For Fitness Professionals

To build the profitable business you’ve always wanted, create some momentum by thinking like an owner, instead of an operator.

Rule #1: Embrace the crazy.  Let’s just acknowledge up front that it’s not easy running your own business. While it’s wonderful to be your own boss (for some of us there’s just no other way to work) the stark reality is that the overwhelming majority of small businesses fail. Why? Business failures are blamed on various causes, from bad to timing to bad luck. But for the successful (determined) business owner there is no bad luck.

No obstacle is insurmountable because the successful business owner is a little bit crazy. You have to be, right? It takes a special breed to shoulder the responsibility of seeking out clients, connecting with them, delivering value and making everything work together, week after week, month after month, year after year. Wouldn’t it be great if some big entity took care of all those details for you? Yeah, right.

It’s your business. Own it.

The reality is that as a successful fitness pro, you get paid to create a positive impact in your clients’ lives. It’s a wonderful position to be in, but you’re the one who’s got to make it work. It’s not a hobby, a part-time job or a spectator sport. It’s a business and you own every aspect of it. To succeed you must be as driven and unstoppable as your most determined clients. Adopt the mindset of a champion.

To succeed in business you must also set yourself apart from your competitors, and that leads us to rule #2.

Rule #2: Innovate or die. No one’s telling you what to do, so you have the freedom to do things the way you want – as long as you attract and retain clients.

Sometimes your clients might want something you’re unable to deliver. Then it’s no longer a match. Other times you can expand your capabilities and meet (or even exceed) your clients’ wants and expectations. That’s a win for both you and your clients -- and it’s how you build a sustainable business. Your ability to anticipate and deliver what your clients really want is your competitive advantage. If you’re always reacting, you’re always going to be behind, and that means one thing: road kill.

So the question is, how do you innovate to meet your clients’ desires? First, listen. What are your clients consistently asking for? Is it a trend, or is it something that is foundational to fitness? Certainly, nutrition is part of that foundation, and now you have access to a tool that enables you to deliver professional meal plans that help your clients get fit better, faster and easier than before.
